Message from the Headteacher - 7th October

Dear Parents

Well done to some of our older children who were tassel bearers for their Houses at our Founders’ Day Service at St Mary’s Church last Saturday. They carried out their duties perfectly and proudly represented the pupils of the Prep School at the service.

The School Council meeting on Monday was a lively debate on how we could make our school more environmentally friendly. The class representatives came to the meeting armed with ideas from their classmates; which ranged from doing more recycling to planting more trees in the grounds and starting a gardening club. Everyone liked the idea of saving electricity around the school and so the children are now busy designing posters encouraging everyone to turn off lights in empty rooms!

This Wednesday was the turn of St Etheldreda’s to lead our school assembly. The theme of the assembly was learning to value differences. The hall looked very bright and colourful as flags from a wide variety of countries were used as the backdrop. The children of St E’s had researched some really interesting facts using the countries of the Rugby World Cup to illustrate their thoughts. The children showed how people of different nations can come together to create something very special, despite differences in language and culture.

The Prep School has been a hive of sporting activity this week and Ms Duncan-Broad has been particularly proud of the children’s achievements. On Tuesday our swimming team competed in a gala at Claremont School. There were some outstanding individual performances and the team spirit ensured that every Battle Abbey Swimmer received enthusiastic support. Thanks go to our supporting parents who cheered the team through every race and to Miss Govan for coaching the team. On Wednesday we hosted a Netball High-Five triangle against Sedlescombe C. E. School and St Peter and St Paul C. E. School fielding two teams from the Prep School. Again every child played to the very best of their ability and collectively they rose to the occasion and fought hard to win every game. The match reports and results are detailed later in the newsletter.

Thank you to everyone at the Prep School for wearing items of denim clothing to school today to support the Jeans for Genes charity. This charity supports children who have been seriously affected by a genetic disorder and funds pioneering research into these conditions. We all enjoyed wearing our jeans to school for the day and raised the total of £122.60 for this worthwhile cause.

Best regards.

Maria Maslin
