Message from the Headteacher - Feb 24th 2012

Dear Parents

It was lovely to welcome everyone back to School on Monday after the half-term break; the snow has finally gone and this week we have enjoyed the longer days and warmer weather that Spring brings.  The children were eager to share with us their half-term adventures and certainly seem ready for the challenges of the weeks ahead.

I enjoyed speaking personally to many parents at our Parents’ Evenings held this week. It was lovely to catch up with many of you and to share in your children’s successes. The Parents’ Evenings gave our teachers the opportunity to share with parents the progress their children have made.  The discussions also focused on how they will be guided and challenged in the months ahead to further raise their attainment.  These evenings strengthen the strong links we enjoy between home and school that underpin the children’s success. The parents of Reception children met with Mrs Cocks during Open Afternoons where they too had the opportunity to see the amazing progress of their children.

It was the turn of St Martin’s to lead Assembly this week.  They led an informative Assembly based on the Christian preparations for Easter; Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Lent. We were reminded that the day before Lent starts is called Shrove Tuesday and that this is also known as Pancake Day. This day was traditionally the last chance to use up the foods Christians would not be eating during Lent. We were told that on Ash Wednesday many churches hold services during which Christians are marked on the forehead with a cross of ashes. The children of St Martin’s then led prayers for Lent.

Pancake Day was celebrated in style at School on Tuesday with Key Stage 1 children making and tasting delicious pancakes.  However the rest of the School did not miss out on the Pancake Day fun, as we all enjoyed a feast of pancakes at lunch!

There is great excitement in the air amongst the Year 5 and 6 children as they have been invited to attend the traditional Valentine’s disco at the Abbey this evening.  We wish them a very happy time.

Best wishes.

Maria Maslin
