Message from the Headteacher - May 18th 2012

Dear Parents

Our Reception Class children took part in our Sponsored Swim last Monday afternoon.  They swam incredibly well and completed their widths with great confidence.  It was lovely to see how much progress they have made with their swimming so far this year.

So every length in our Sponsored Swim had now been swum!  Miss Govan has added them all together to provide an amazing Prep School grand total:-

3051 lengths were swum, which totals a fabulous 87,525m; or 54 miles, which is the equivalent of swimming the English Channel to France and back!

Well done to every child in the school!

Now the Sponsored Swims have finished, the tasks of collecting the monies must begin.  We would appreciate it if we could receive all monies by Friday 25 May but obviously you can send it in before that date.  So far the total is a fantastic £1,135.10 so keep it coming in!

Monday’s Assembly was led by Year 3.  To tie in with the School’s Centenary year they had been thinking about the number 100 and other places and people who have recently been celebrating their centenary.  Each child in Year 3 had researched their own facts; which included the 100th anniversaries of the sinking of the Titanic and the 100th birthday of the international Girl Guide and Girl Scouting Movements.

St Mary’s led Assembly on Wednesday on the theme of thinking about others and being selfless.  The children told us about great acts of bravery carried out by passengers and crew on the stricken liners RMS Titanic and the more recent Costa Concordia.  The sinking of any ocean liner is a tragic story, but St Mary’s illustrated that even in the depths of despair, people find the courage and the strength to help people selflessly.  The children then challenged the rest of the school to try to have the same spirit; one that thinks of others first and our own needs later.

Next week will be a very exciting one at the Prep School.  The children from Years 5 and 6 are visiting Normandy, France on a residential trip.  Meanwhile, back at school children from Years 1-4 will be enjoying Olympic based activities.

With best wishes.
Maria Maslin
