Dear Parents
Summer finally arrived at the Prep School this week and the children have enjoyed summer sports and finally getting out and about in our extensive school grounds.
With bags packed and passports gathered in, Year 5 and 6 eagerly departed for their French trip to St-Fraimbault, Normandy very early on Tuesday morning accompanied by Mrs Hazell, Mrs Corrigan, Mr Croft and Miss Chidley. They have shopped at a French market, enjoyed French lessons, seen cheese being produced and also visited a biscuit factory. We cannot wait to hear of their adventures upon their return to school next week.
Meanwhile the rest of the school has embraced the Olympics!
Our Olympic Games fever started last Friday by holding a grand torch relay, on the exact day that the real Olympic torch reached our shores. After lunch, the Olympic Prayer was read, the torch left its starting place in the dining hall and off it travelled to each classroom and the Nursery carried by the class monitors.
Children in Years 1-4 have been in team groups this week looking at different parts of the Olympic Games and learning a Paralympic sport. The Olympic Games, both ancient and modern, have been explored in great depth. Each team found out about the history of the Olympics in Ancient Greece and enjoyed sampling Greek food dressed in traditional Ancient Greek attire (thank you for sending in the sheets!) They have researched the many and varied events of the modern and ancient Games and have found out about past Olympic champions. The children learnt the Paralympic sport of Goalball, which is a team sport for blind and partially-sighted athletes. The children competed in teams of three and tried to throw a ball that has bells embedded in it into the opponents’ goal. Some children found being blindfolded quite a challenge and it certainly helped them to develop their listening skills.
The week culminated in an Ancient Greek style Olympic Games which was held earlier today. The children, dressed in traditional Ancient Greek dress, competed in discus and javelin events amongst many others. The children cheered on their teams and supported each other for every event.
Both the French trip and the Olympic themed days illustrate how creatively we embrace the curriculum at the Prep School; the love of learning and delight of the children has been clear to see.
Enjoy a sunny weekend.
