Message from the Headteacher - June 15th 2012

Dear Parents

Today was Yellow Day at the Prep School.  Every child and member of staff came to school dressed in yellow clothing to mark this special fundraising day.  It certainly made our school look very bright!  The money received will go to support the palliative care services at St Michael’s Hospice and ensure that every patient receives the very best care and attention when they need it most.  Julie came from St Michael’s Hospice to speak at an Assembly just before half term and explained to us the wonderful service they provide.  The children are now busily filling the special collection tin with their money.

On Wednesday Year 4 led a fascinating Assembly about the life of a Paralympic athlete Nathan Stephens from Wales. Nathan faced a disaster that changed his life forever and lost one leg completely and the other from below the knee. However he was determined that this would not stop him being active and succeeding in life and turned his attention to sport. He became the men’s javelin champion at the IPC World Athletic Championships in January 2011 where he set a new world record and this summer he is setting his sights on a gold medal at the 2012 Games.  We learnt that when we face difficult situations we can either moan and complain and say “It’s not fair” or we can do something about it and become determined to succeed.

Finally the rain ceased, albeit briefly and the summer sporting season got underway. The Prep School hosted Skippers Hill Prep for a girls rounders match. The field was bathed in summer sunshine and the girls spent a glorious afternoon batting and fielding displaying great sportsmanship.  On this occasion the girls from Skippers Hill outplayed us, but there were some great individual performances and great fielding to second post by our girls in the latter stages of the match. Well done to them all.

Tomorrow we are holding our Centenary Summer Fete at 12 noon for every Battle Abbey School family to enjoy and we are very much looking forward to seeing you there, come rain or shine!

With best wishes.

Maria Maslin
