Dear Parents
St Etheldreda’s launched our Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in fine style on Wednesday by leading a very special Assembly. Every member of the House had researched interesting facts about the Queen and about events during her magnificent 60 year reign. Amongst many interesting facts we found out that:-
• the Queen can speak fluent French;
• the Queen has given out about 78,000 Christmas puddings to staff;
• the Queen learnt to drive in 1945 when she joined the Army;
………. and the Queen has sat for 129 portraits during her reign.
Yesterday was “Lego Day” at the Prep School and the children went Lego crazy. The task for the whole School was to construct an Olympic city complete with sporting venues. Great excitement ensued as the children in mixed age groups built stadiums fit for Olympic Lego athletes, swimming pools complete with viewing galleries, show jumping arenas and football pitches; indeed everything you would expect from a Lego mega-city from shopping centres to luxury hotels. Enrichment activities such as these are valuable opportunities for the children to extend their thinking and skills in different areas of the curriculum and to work alongside different groups of children.
The sun smiled down on the Prep School today as we prepared to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The school grounds were bedecked with bunting and balloons favouring the national colours of Red, White and Blue. Part of the morning was spent making crowns and tiaras and there were certainly some very original designs. Flag waving, trumpet blowing and the singing of the National Anthem accompanied the celebratory lunch. Our talented kitchen staff baked a wonderful cake which was shared and enjoyed by all. Commemorative coins were presented to every child as a keepsake of the occasion. Well done to members of the School Council for helping to organise the splendid party menu.
The Diamond Jubilee celebrations brought to a close a very busy and exciting half-term.
We wish you all a lovely holiday next week and look forward to the children returning for the final half-term of the year on Monday 11th June.
Maria Maslin
