Message from the Headteacher October 12th 2012

Dear Parents

Sounds of Harvest Samba rang out of the School this morning as Key Stage 1 celebrated their Harvest Festival with some tremendous singing.  We welcomed the Reverend Duckett to share in our celebration and to join with us as we gave thanks for our food.  We discovered just how many important words we could make from the letters of HARVEST.   The children decided that is good for those of us who “HAVE” plenty, to “SHARE” with those who are not as fortunate.  The children’s donations of produce were displayed in the Hall during the special Assembly and the Reverend will be distributing them to needy parishioners in his district shortly.

Professional poet Brian Moses, who bills himself as a modern day medieval travelling jester, came to the Prep School on Tuesday and inspired us all with two wonderful poetry and percussion performances.

The children had been familiarising themselves with his website and reading his poetry prior to the visit.  The lively performance, full of audience participation, did not disappoint as he performed some of their favourites; Shopping Trolley, Snake Hotel and Walking my Iguana!  Brian’s performance was made even more dramatic by the clever use of percussion instruments which emphasised the rhythm in the poems.  The children in Key Stage 1 could not believe how loud the percussion instruments could get and Year 1 were thrilled when he personally signed their class book of his poems.  Years 5 and 6 also enjoyed a creative writing workshop with Brian where they were asked to imagine an event, person or animal in their past and write a rhythmic, non-rhyming poem.  The children rose to the challenge and after Brian had given some expert hints and tips the children immersed themselves in poetry writing.  By the end of the session, every child had written a poetic verse and are looking forward to producing their own anthology of poems very soon!

As this week draws to a close, we hope that the children from Years 5 and 6 enjoy their Harold’s Night Disco at the Abbey this evening and have lots of fun!

Best wishes
Maria Maslin
