Message from the Headteacher January 18th 2013

Dear Parents

This week at School the children have been thinking about aiming high and “Going for Goals”.  In their PSHE sessions the children have been discussing the notion of aiming high and of knowing what they want to achieve both in and out of School over the rest of this school year.  They recognised that achieving goals could be exceedingly hard work at times, but that we should persist and ask for help from our friends or staff at School.  The older children have been looking longer term at their goals and have been thinking about their dreams and aspirations for their futures beyond the Prep School.

Year 5 have been busy researching interesting facts from history for every single day in January and they shared them with the rest of the School during a fascinating Assembly on Wednesday.  They just couldn’t miss out their fact for 6th January 1066 when Harold Godwinson was crowned King of England and became famous as the King beaten by William the Conqueror!  A very relevant fact for every Battle Abbey School pupil!  We learnt that on 7th January in 1785 the first hot air balloon flight across the English Channel took place.  It was accomplished by a Frenchman called Blanchard and an American called Jeffries.  Obviously the British were not leading the way in balloon technology at this time!  Every date was illustrated with a keen historical fact and the whole School (included the staff) enjoyed a thoroughly informative Assembly.  The last chronological fact was for 31st January 1928, where the month came to a sticky end.  Scotch tape - that’s sellotape to us all was first sold on this date and since then thousands of miles of sellotape have been stuck to things all around the world.  Thank you Year 5 for educating us with such interesting facts and all before 9.00am in the morning!

With temperatures plummeting and the weather becoming increasingly wintery we wish you all a lovely weekend full of joyous fun in the snow.

Best wishes.
Maria Maslin
