Dear Parents
St Martin’s led the way in our pancake races this week following on from their Assembly on Monday. During Assembly they explained how Pancake Day is celebrated in different ways around the world and explained that Lent is a time when Christians prepare for Easter. We were reminded that the day before Lent starts is called Shrove Tuesday and that this is also known as Pancake Day. This day was customarily the last chance to use up the foods Christians would not be eating during Lent. The children then demonstrated some highly practised and spectacular pancake flipping before leading prayers for Lent.
The children have used their swimming sessions this week to complete their Sponsored Swims. Reception class children took part on Monday afternoon. They swam incredibly well and completed their widths with great confidence. It was lovely to see how much progress they have made with their swimming so far this year.
The children from Key Stages One and Two were full of excitement and anticipation as they made their way to the pool for their turns; keen to beat their initial distances recorded at the beginning of term. Determination to succeed was evident as the children from Reception class to Year 6 swam their very best and completed some amazing distances, with a significant number of strong swimmers completing over a mile! Now the Sponsored Swims have finished, the tasks of collecting the monies for our chosen charities, ‘Send a Cow’ and ‘Marie Curie Cancer Care’ has begun. Thank you to those who have already sent in your sponsor money; we are hoping to beat last year’s fundraising total.
The final day of this half term was a special Enrichment Day for the children who were treated to the delights of “Jaws N Claws”. Snakes, snails, spiders and an amazing collection of other animals were brought in for the children to see, feel and learn about. Phil from “Jaws N Claws” expertly spoke about each creature and led the highly informative and entertaining handling sessions. The children really enjoyed the experience with the highlight being the rather large tarantula!
Everyone at the Prep School wishes you all a lovely break next week and we look forward to welcoming the children back to School for another busy and exciting half-term on Monday 25th February.
Best Wishes
Maria Maslin
