Dear Parents
Key Stage 2 enjoyed a wonderful History Day in the grounds of the Prep School on Monday where they learnt about the lives of Romans and Normans. The sessions were very practical and the children especially enjoyed learning how to use a Roman shield to protect their army and later they found great delight in charging into battle with foam swords!
Pupils from Years 2 to 6 took to the stage at the Prep School on Tuesday evening for a spectacular “Musical Summer SoirĂ©e”. Every class from Key Stage 2 charmed the audience with their compositional pieces; which ranged from Year 4’s rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” on keyboard and glockenspiel to Year 6’s song entitled “Living the Dream”. The Stomp group performed a rhythmic piece and the Year 2 children played two pieces on their ocarinas. The individual performances were equally strong and included a fine mix of vocals and instrumentals. Miss Faye Neave, the Prep School’s Director of Music, was congratulated for producing a wonderfully entertaining evening celebrating the musical talents of every child.
Wednesday saw the Key Stage 1 Speech and Drama Group perform “The Bremen Town Rappers” which is a short play based on an original story told by the Brothers Grimm. It was a tale of four animals who go off to seek their fortune and the children performed it with great confidence. The audience was in for a fine treat, as the Key Stage 2 Drama Group then performed “The Upside Down Twits”. This play dramatised the sequence in the book of “The Twits”, when Mr and Mrs Twit are fooled into believing that the world has turned upside down. It was a lively play with plenty of audience participation - a fun time was had by all. The performances clearly showed the children enjoying their opportunity to take to the stage and entertain their audience.
Last Friday afternoon saw the field set and ready for Key Stage 2 Sports Day. Every child from Years 3 to 6 took part in a carousel of sporting activities. The children were cheered on by family and friends who had turned out to support them. This was followed by sprint and distance finals and the all-important House relays. Before the points of the afternoon were totalled, the running track was cleared for the parent egg and spoon races, where the children enjoyed cheering on their mums and dads! The House Cup was jointly won this year by St Mary’s and St Martin’s.
We are looking forward to an exciting final week of term next week!
With best wishes.
Maria Maslin
