Message from the Headteacher November 15th 2013

Dear Parents

Following a much needed break, children and staff have returned to an extremely busy second half of term.  The children have already been busy with a variety of sporting fixtures and educational visits as well as facing fresh challenges in the classroom.

Wearing home clothes for charity was order of the day at the Prep School today as the school exchanged their usual school uniform  for mufti to support the BBC Children in Need Appeal. Children arrived at school this morning dressed in mufti and wearing wristbands and other Pudsey Bear accessories.  All money raised for this well-known charity will go to provide grants to projects for disadvantaged children and young people in the United Kingdom.  Thank you to members of the School Council who helped organise the sale of the official Children in Need wristbands.

This year the whole School took the Love in a Box campaign to heart.  Over the last few weeks shoeboxes have been filled with Christmas cheer for under-privileged children in Ukraine and Moldavia.  An amazing 99 boxes were collected together at the Prep School this week and literally filled the entrance to the School!  On Wednesday a representative from the Mustard Seed Relief Mission came and could not believe just how many festive shoeboxes we had to load onto his van.  These boxes will now go to Eastbourne before making their long journey to the orphanages, where the precious gifts are given out to the children who are eagerly awaiting them.

Children from St Martin’s led an interesting Assembly on Wednesday based on their very own namesake St Martin!  As it was St Martin’s Day on 11th November, the children from this House told us all about St Martin’s life; from his life as a Roman soldier to his time as a monk.  We heard about the legendary story of St Martin cutting his red cloak in half to share with a beggar during a snowstorm and that he became known for his kindness especially towards those people who were poor and those in need of help.  We reflected in School that we too could aim to be like St Martin - both at School and in our lives and that we didn’t need a red cloak to do kind deeds for others!

Please remember that tomorrow is our Open Morning at the Prep School and Nursery.  We look forward to welcoming current and prospective families between 10am and 12 noon to see the children at work and at play.

Best wishes

Maria Maslin
